Hot Water Heater Guide
Water heating is the third largest energy expense in your home. It typically accounts for about 14% of your utility bill. There are four ways to cut your water heating bills:
- Use less hot water
- Turn down the thermostat on your water heater
- Insulate your water heater,
- Buy a new, more efficient water heater.
A family of four, each showering for 5 minutes a day, uses 700 gallons of water a week; this is enough for a 3-year supply of drinking water for one person. You can cut that amount in half simply by using low-flow showerheads and faucets.
- Repair leaky faucets promptly; a leaky faucet wastes gallons of water in a short period.
- Insulate your electric hot-water pipes and install a Grundfos hot water recirculation pump system.
- Install aerators in faucets and low-flow showerheads.
- Buy a new water heater with a thick, insulating shell; while it may cost more initially than one without insulation, the energy savings will continue during the lifetime of the appliance.
- Although most water heaters last 10–15 years, it’s best to start shopping for a new one if yours is more than 7 years old. Doing some research before your heater fails will enable you to select one that most appropriately meets your needs.
- Drain a quart of water from your water tank every 6 months to remove sediment that impedes heat transfer and lowers the efficiency of your heater. The type of water tank you have determines the steps to take, so follow the manufacturer’s advice.
- Take more showers than baths. Bathing uses the most hot water in the average household. You use 15–25 gallons of hot water for a bath, but less than 10 gallons during a 5-minute shower.

The size of your family, the utilities in your area and the space available for your water heater all play a role in determining how to choose a water heater. Buy a water heater with the following information in mind:
Water Heater Size Chart
- Storage tank water heaters are the most common type and the best water heater to buy. These units have an insulated tank where water is heated and stored until it is needed. They are available in electric, liquid propane (LP) and natural gas models. Natural gas and LP water heaters normally use less energy and are less expensive to operate than electric models of the same size. Storage tank water heaters are the most common type.
- Storage tank water heaters are designated by the amount of water they hold, in gallons. Tank size is one of the major considerations when purchasing one of these water heaters. If you intend to use a storage tank water heater, use our chart as a guide to finding the size you need.
- Another consideration for storage tank water heaters is recovery rate — the number of gallons of water they can heat in an hour. The greater your demand for hot water, the higher recovery rate you need.
- When you buy a water heater, look at the energy efficiency and yearly operating costs of a water heater before you decide which one is right for your needs. This information can be found on the Energy Guide label.
- Know the dimensions of the space where your water heater resides. If your hot water use increases and you need to upgrade to a larger tank size, it may be necessary to run plumbing to a different area so the new, larger unit will fit. One alternative to running new plumbing is to purchase a low boy or short water heater. These units are shorter but bigger around than a normal water heater, allowing them to hold the same amount of water as their larger counterparts while still fitting in areas with limited headroom.
- Small storage tank water heaters, known as point of use, utility or mobile home water heaters, are good choices for adding hot water to out buildings, shops or garages. Utility water heaters usually range in size from 2.5 to 19 gallons. The largest of these miniature units can also be used to provide hot water to secondary bathrooms that may be situated far from your home’s main water heater.
- Periodic water heater maintenance can significantly extend the life of your water heater and minimize loss of efficiency. Read your owner’s manual for specific maintenance recommendations.

• No return line required
• Installs in less than one hour
• No electricity needed under the sink
• Built-in timer & line cord
• Use less energy than a 25-watt light bulb
• Can save up to 16,000 gallons of water per year, per household
In Arizona, the average household consumes 126,632 gallons of water per year at an annual cost of $236.49*. With new housing starts estimated to reach 54,903 per year by 2000, annual water consumption by new houses alone will total nearly 7 billion gallons at a cost of approximately $13 million per year. Were all new houses built in Arizona to include a Grundfos hot water recirculation system (with an average 200 foot supply line), water saved would total 16,534** gallons per year per household. The corresponding annual water bill would be reduced by approximately $32 and the energy bill by approximately $44. In total, hot water recirculation could save the state of Arizona nearly 950 million gallons of water per year and save new home owners nearly $1.8 million in annual water charges.
The Basic Concept
Every homeowner gets frustrated waiting for hot water — but how many stop to think what happens to the 2-3 gallons of water that runs down the drain during the wait?
Those gallons of water are wasted, and in an average household that takes four showers per day, that can add up to thousands of gallons per year. Multiplied over a subdivision of 300 homes, a community can have millions of gallons of water go down the drain and into the wastewater system every single year (see state-by-state water consumption and costs).
In a region where water conservation issues are rising in importance with a rapidly expanding population, and a record economic expansion that has consumers looking for comfort, Hot Water Recirculation (HWR) pumps — such as those manufactured by Grundfos Pumps Corporation — are a good solution to this problem.
In typical plumbing, water is pumped from the water heater through the pipes to the tap. Once the tap is shut off, the water remaining in the pipes cools — hence the familiar wait for hot water the next time the tap is opened.
Grundfos HWR pumps offer a solution to the problem by attaching to the water heater through the hot water pipe. By constantly circulating hot water through the pipes from the heater to the furthest fixture, the water in the pipes is always hot, and no water is wasted during the wait. In an average new home, HWR systems typically cost less than $1,000, including parts and installation.
